Capt. David C. Foley Usn, Ret.

David Charles Foley was born in Lexington, KY, on March 14th, 1965. He was the only child to Charles Taylor and Elizabeth Black Foley. David, a lifetime nonsmoker, succumbed to metastasized lung cancer on August 31, 2014 after fighting it since February 2011.David leaves behind his loving wife, Jennifer, and two wonderful daughters, Taylor Louise and Rose Riley, as well as his mother, Elizabeth. Additionally, David leaves behind many loving cousins and many good friends that he has been graced with over the years.David's family moved from Lexington to Oxford, OH in 1970. David attended Talawanda High School where he lettered in football and track. He was a member of several student organizations including the National Honor Society. David graduated magna cum laude from Talawanda in 1983.David attended Miami University in Oxford, where he was a member of the Naval Reserve Officers' Training Corps. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science from Miami in May, 1987. He worked as a manager at the then Miami-Western Theater in uptown Oxford. He also worked at the Goggin Ice Arena where he drove the Zamboni machine that conditions the ice.After graduation, David was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. He was designated as a Naval Intelligence Officer and conducted various intelligence operations and functions across his nearly 27 year career. Of note, he and Jennifer met in Seoul, Korea in 1991, where Jennifer was an Army Nurse at the 121st Evacuation Hospital and David was on the Navy Staff there. After Korea, David studied the Russian language at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. He then attended the Naval Postgraduate School, also in Monterey, where he received a Master of Arts degree.David and Jennifer were married June 9th, 1995, at Fort McNair, in Washington DC. Their wedding ceremony was a beautiful event, held outdoors next to the Potomac River, with the Washington Monument visible.David was then assigned as Assistant Naval Attach in Moscow, Russia, beginning in July, 1995. He was the most junior officer ever posted in that position. Jennifer and David, next moved to Japan, where David was on the staff of the U.S. 7th Fleet, and Jennifer worked in the naval hospital. They then were posted back to Washington, D.C., where David served on the Joint Staff. He was then selected to attend senior war college at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces where he received a Master of Science degree in Resource Management. Following ICAF he was assigned to the Navy Staff in the Pentagon. After six years in Washington, D.C., David was assigned as Staff Intelligence Officer with Strike Group 9, onboard the carrier Abraham Lincoln, homeported in Everett, WA. After two years with the Lincoln, David was promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned as Officer-in-Charge of the Naval Intelligence Detachment located within the Naval War College in Newport, RI. After three years as Officer-in-Charge, David took his final position as a faculty professor at the College and taught Joint Military Operations.David was medically retired from active duty at the end of January, 2014. David professed a strong Christian faith since a young boy. While in Ohio, he attended the Oxford Bible Fellowship. In Newport, he and his family are members of the First Presbyterian Church, where David served as an Elder until his death.David had a real zest for life. He loved his parents, his friends and his own family with evident passion and devotion. He was an automobile and motorcycle enthusiast from a young age, owning many bikes and two wonderful 1965 Ford Mustangs. David was outgoing, friendly and engaging with people of all ages. He was devoted to his parents, family and several long-term friends from Oxford and the Navy. David wished everyone the very best in life, especially a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and good health. He will be missed by many, yet wonderful memories remain.Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 5, 2014 from 4:00-7:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 10:00am in the First Presbyterian Church, Broadway and Everett, Newport.
