Newport,- Captain George L. Voegeli, USN, Ret., 88 0f 43 McCormack Road Newport, formerly of Mansfield, MA died Thursday, January 29, 2004 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Leona F.Burkett Voegeli. Born in Mansfield, MA on January 31, 1915, he was the son of the late Frederick B. And Mildred Hersey Voegeli. Mr. Voegeli graduated from Mansfield High School, Class of 1932. He attended the United States Coast Gaurd Academy. Mr. Voegeli served in the Merchant Marines for 7 years beginning with United fruit Steamship Lines as asupply clerk. When World War II began he joined the United States Navy where he served for 24 years, retiring as Captain in 1965. During his service he headed the earthquake disaster releif efforts to the Greek Island of Cephalonia in September of 1953. Mr. Voegeligraduated from the Naval War College, Newport, RI in 1961. After the NAvy he began work at Nassau Community College in Garden City in New york as assistant dean of administration, retiring in 1982. Mr. Voegeli was past president of Glen Head Rotary in Long Island, New York, a member of the Newport Rotary Club, the Navy Lodge, and also served on the board at the Army Navy YMCA in Newport. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church in Newport.
