Carl Gunnar Oaklund

Portsmouth, RI - Carl Gunnar Oaklund, 74, of 12 Third Street, Portsmouth, RI, died Sunday, July 5, 2009 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI.He was the husband of Rosemary Souza Oaklund. Born in New York City, NY on February 3, 1935, he was the son of the late Axel and Violet Johansson Oaklund.Mr. Oaklund worked as an automobile painter for 14 years at Barry Pontiac retiring in 1990. He also worked at the Navy Exchange as a security officer. Carl was a member of the Newport Lodge of Elks and served as Exalted Ruler. He was a founding member of the Green Valley Country Club and an avid New York Yankees and Giants fan. Besides his wife of 56 years, he is survived by his son Carl F. Oaklund and his wife Angelaof North Kingstown, RI, two step-sons Robert A. Johnson and his wife Linda of Las Vegas, NV and William J. Johnson of Middletown, RI, his step daughter Rosemary R. Almeida and her husband Greg of Clovis, CA, four grandchildren, five step grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren. His funeral will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at 11:00 am in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.Burial will be private.
