Middletown, RI - Carolyn Hazel (McNeil) Mallinson, 83, of 3 Sherri Lane, Middletown, RI, died Sunday, June 10, 2012 at Kindred Hospital, Stoughton, MA. She was the wife of the late Capt. William Keith Mallinson, USN, Ret. Born in North Adams, MA on Mar. 26, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Cora (Viens) McNeil.Raised on a dairy farm at the base of the "hairpin turn" on the Mohawk Trail in North Adams MA, Carolyn chose a nursing career when coming of age. After earning her degree, she trained at Mass General and started a full-time position at Pittsfield (MA) General. Carolyn would meet her future husband Bill there, a patient at the time. The two were soon married and off on a Navy adventure that saw several "floats" and many ports including the Great Lakes, Annapolis Maryland, Arlington Virginia, Huntington Beach California, Mayport Florida but luckily, it was mostly here in Newport. Along with Bill, she dutifully raised 4 children while he concentrated on his long and distinguished Navy Career. Carolyn enjoyed her role as a Navy wife and actively took part in all the activities the role demanded. She was a proud and steadfast parishioner of St Lucy's Church, acting as a Eucharistic Minister for many years. Carolyn and Bill spent almost every waking moment together in retirement until his passing a little over two years ago. Both routinely volunteered for Meals on Wheels, enjoyed a round of golf with friends, and were members of Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth and Sunny Breeze Country Club in Punta Gorda, FL. She was a long time member of the Navy Wives Club. Carolyn was always thankful to have enjoyed so many years with Bill in their retirement home in Punta Gorda. She loved to read but enjoyed nothing more then spending time with her family and especially watching her four beloved grandchildren grow up before her eyes. Carolyn is survived by her children, Ann Marie Canole and her husband Pete of Cumberland, RI, James Keith Mallinson and his wife Tracy of Middletown, RI, John Steven Mallinson of Cumberland, RI, and William Keith Mallinson Jr and his wife Tobi of Portsmouth, RI, her grandchildren, Emily Canole, Laura Canole, Jake Mallinson and Bennett Mallinson, her nephew Michael Clifford and his wife Sheila of Holden, MA and her niece, Kathleen (Clifford) Sweeney and her husband Joseph of New Canaan, CT. She was the sister of the late Shirley Clifford and her husband Dan. Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 15, 2012, from 4-7 in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.Her funeral will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2012, leaving from the Memorial Funeral Home, at 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.
