Catherine A. Walsh

Catherine A. (Varr) Walsh formerly of 53 Drowne Pkwy, Rumford and 360 Gibbs Ave., Newport, a long-time high school teacher, died August 23 at St. Elizabeth's Manor. She was the loving and devoted wife of the late Professor Stephen R.Walsh, Esq.Born in Warwick, she was the daughter of the late William F.Varr and Rachel Felton Varr. Mrs. Walsh graduated from Bryant University and earned a Master's of Business degree from Providence College. She had a rewarding and dedicated career of distinguished professional service for over 20 years at Shea HS in Pawtucket. She also taught at Bryant University, Katherine Gibbs, and Bay View Academy. She inspired and encouraged her students and was a compassionate educator.Catherine was vibrant, intelligent, fun but mostly kind. She opened her homes, making all feel welcome so there were many happy and memorable times, shared at the beach houses, DalesWell and on Great Island. Her family will always be grateful and cherish those times.Mrs. Walsh leaves behind, daughter, Cathy-Ann Winston of Portsmouth, two sons, Stephen R. Walsh, Jr. of Redondo Beach, CA, and Gregory V. Walsh of Lake Worth, FL, and brother, Dr. William F.Varr of Jamestown. Nana will be missed by her five grandchildren: Tara and Jared Winston, Kayleigh Walsh, and Courtney and Erin Walsh and many loving nieces and nephews.The wake will be on Friday, September 6, 2013from 5-8 PM at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Rd, Portsmouth. Saturday, September 7, 2013 there will be a Mass to celebrate her life at 9 AM at St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Rd. Portsmouth, followed by her burial with her husband at St. Columba Catholic Cemetery in Middletown.One of Catherine's proudest moments was earning her graduate degree from Providence College and continuing the "Friar" family legacy; because of her and her husband's influence three generations of Walshes have attended PC. Because of her and Steve's love of learning and PC, the family is requesting donations be made to the Professor Stephen Walsh and Catherine Walsh Scholarship at Providence College.
