Catherine "Cass" Elizabeth Shoppell

Mrs. Catherine "Cass" Elizabeth (Hegarty) Shoppell made her way to heaven after a short stay at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Care Center in Providence, RI due to complications of Alzheimer's disease. Cass died peacefully in her sleep on March 22, 2015 at the age of 80.A loving wife; wicked awesome mother; dedicated grandmother; and a supportive and kind mother-in-law. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Samuel J. Shoppell, Jr., and by all but one of her nine children: Samuel, Stephen, Stanley, san, Scott, Sharon, Stuart, and Stacie; she was pre-deceased by her daughter Carol Anne. She is also survived by her 19 grandchildren.Catherine was born in Philadelphia, PA, the youngest of 5 children to the late Catherine K. (Kelly) Hegarty and John Martin Hegarty of Ireland. She graduated from West Catholic Girls High School. She is survived by her sister Theresa Sweeney of St. Louis, MO; and her brother Edward Hegarty of Philadelphia, PA. She is also pre-deceased by her sister Helen Claypoole of Lenhartsville, PA; and her brother Eugene Francis Hegarty of Cape May, NJ.Our mom balanced motherhood, frequent military relocations, and family life with a few different careers. She was a long time employee of the Newport Naval Station, Newport, RI, retired as a Traffic Manager of the Supply Department in 1999 after 22 years of service.She had many interests including bowling, camping, ceramics, hot air ballooning, yoga, and traveling. She was a volunteer for many community services including Dollar for Scholars, Lucy's Hearth, and at local nursing homes. Cass also had a very special place in her heart for her family and friends at the Lake.At Cass's request, there will be no viewing or wake. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass Of Christian Burial which will be held Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at 11:30am in St. Lucy's Church 909 West Main Road, Middletown.
