Catherine Koulouvardis

Catherine ?Katie? Koulouvardis, 86, of 52 Charles Street, Newport, RI, died peacefully on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Newport Hospital.Born in Newport, RI, on January 3, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Harry C. and Helen Michaolpoulos Koulouvardis.Katie worked for the US Navy for 40 years, starting her career as a teletype operator. Over the 40 years, she received several commendations for her dedicated service. In 1986 she retired as Supervisor of the telecommunications department on the Newport Navy Base.She was a lifelong member of St. Spyridon?s Church, and served as president of the Philoptochos Society for many years. As a very active and dedicated member of the church, she contributed significantly to parish life. Her strength of will and faith will be missed by the church community. She was also a member of NARFE, a federal employees organization, the Newport Art Association, and the Church Women United a local organization of church lay leaders. She also volunteered many hours to Newport Hospital with their fundraising efforts over the years.She is survived by her brother George Koulouvardis of Newport, RI, nephew Harry Koulouvardis of Florida, her great niece Melissa Pinherio of Newport, RI, her great nephew Christopher Koulouvardis and great niece Katina Koulouvardis of Florida, and several cousins.She was the sister of the late John Koulouvardis and Constantine ?Charles? Koulouvardis and the aunt of the late Helen Nelson. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, from 5:00-8:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at 10:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a funeral service at 11:00 am in St. Spyridons Greek Orthodox Church, 390 Thames Street, Newport.
