Cathleen Kay Dugan OConnell, 87, of Kay Street, Newport, RI, passed away on June 8, 2011 at home. She was born on March 1, 1924 in Newport to Col. Richard Dugan and his wife, Kathryn. Kay graduated from the Newport Hospital School of Nursing in 1941 at the age of 17. She later married the love of her life, Jay K. OConnell and raised two daughters, Linda and Anne. Kay worked for many years at the Honore M. Sullivan Specialty Shop on Bellevue Avenue and she was a longtime member of both the Trigon and Mosaic Clubs of Newport. Kay was also a member, for many years, of the Ida Lewis Yacht Club and the Newport Country Club. Many of her summers were spent with friends at Hazards Beach. She was the secretary of the Widowed Persons Support Group of Newport County. An avid reader, she loved her time volunteering as a member of the Literacy Volunteers of Newport. Kay was an ardent traveler and especially enjoyed vacationing in Bermuda.She is survived by her two daughters, Linda L. OConnell and Anne Richardson, both of Newport; her brother, Cmdr. Richard F. Dugan, US Navy, Ret., and his wife, Patricia, of Little Compton; two grandchildren, Bridget A. and Robert S. Richardson, both of Newport; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Jay, and her sister Mary D. Allan.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2011, from 5-7pm in the Hambly Funeral Home, Brick House, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, RI.Her funeral will be held on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 8 a.m. from Hambly Funeral Home, Brick House, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, RI, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Spring Street and Memorial Blvd., Newport, RI. Burial will be private.In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Newport Public Library, 300 Spring Street, Newport, RI 02840 or to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Attn: Donor Services, PO Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309.
