Channie (Sutton) Toney, 77, of Park Holm, Newport, RI, died on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of Cleveland S. Toney. Born in Gatesville, NC on January 28, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John and Edon Nowell Sutton. Mrs. Toney was a member of the Florence Gray Senior Citizens Center in Newport where she often played Bingo. She enjoyed reading novels and watching westerns and soap operas. She loved traveling and was a very giving woman. She also loved her family. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, James E. Toney of Torrance, CA and Kevin S. Toney of Chattanooga, TN; a brother, Lee Sutton of Columbus, SC; Two sisters, Virginia Hatcher and Eunice "Mickey" Outland; son-in-law, Ronald Walls, Sr.; ten grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughters, Willa "Esther" Walls and Christine Sutton-Davis, and her siblings; John "Buddy" Sutton, Willie Mae Sutton, Elizabeth Sutton, Nellie Ruth Clarke and Minnie Pearl Sutton. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday March 19, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport RI. Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday March 20, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Island Cemetery.
