Newport, - Capt. Chantee Lewis, USN, Ret. 77, of 36 Ayrault Street, Newport, died suddenly Sunday, September 7, 2003 at home.He was the husband of Lorna Rutherford Lewis. Born in Sacramento, CA, he was the son of the late Francis and Bess Steere Lewis.A graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy Class of ?48A, Capt. Lewis served 27 years in the Navy retiring from the Naval War College on January 1, 1975. During his naval service he received the degree of Master of Science in Management from the U.S. Naval Graduate School and a Masters Degree and Doctor of Business Administration from George Washington University in Washington, DC.He was a decorated naval aviater who saw combat duty in Vietnam. His medals and awards were a Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Vietnam Distinguiahed Service Medal Foreign Award, WWII Vicctory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Navy Occupation Medal Europe, Vietnam Service Medal and the Navy Expeditionary Medal Cuba. After retiring from the Navy Captain Lewis taught financial management at Bryant College in Smithfield, RI for 20 years retiring in 1996 as a full professer. For the past five years he taught courses in real estate finance at Bellevue Realters in Newport. He was a founding owner/ director and financial advisor to the Newport Athletic Club. He was a co-owner and business partner in a Comfor Inn in Killington, VT. His main interests post Navy were family, taxes, finance, real estate and down-hill sking. Besides his wife he is survived by his son Michael Rutherford Lewis of Newport, RI, his daughter Shannon Elizabeth Lewis of Middletown, RI, and his grandson Jeremy Rutherford Frank of Middletown, RI.A graveside service with military honors will take place Monday, September 15, at 3:00pm at Trinity Cemetery, East Main Road, Portsmouth, followed by a celebration of Capt. Lewis? life to begin at 4:00pm at the Atlantic Beach Club, 53 Purgatory Road, Middletown.Donations may be made in his memory to the Volunteers in Newport Education, Rogers High School, 15 Wickham Road, Newport, RI 02840.Arrangements are by the Memorial Funeral Home, Newport.
