Newport, RI - Charles A. Andy Hambly, 92, of 53 Ayrault Street, Newport, RI, died Monday, December 15, 2008 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was born on February 25, 1916 in Tiverton and moved to Newport at the age of 2. And was the husband of the late Mary Moran Hambly. He was the son of the late Charles A. Hambly and Susan Cone Hambly. He is survived by his children, Charles A. Hambly, Jr., Marilynne A. Manning and Jeanne S. Harrington and her husband, William P. Harrington, five grandchildren Charles A. Hambly, III, Dana R. Hambly and his wife Kerilynn, Melissa C. Hambly, William Paul Harrington, Jr. and his wife Wendy and Kevin H. Harrington and one great grandchild Ian Dyer. Mr. Hambly was a Councilman and then Mayor of Newport from 1961 to 1965. He then became the Vice Chairman of the Newport Redevelopment Agency at the time it began redeveloping the Newport waterfront. He was the owner of Hambly Funeral Home which he sold in 1974. He is a veteran of World War II serving as a lieutenant bombardier on B-29s in the Okinawa campaign in the Pacific Theatre. He was Chairman of the Board and President of Newport Fed Bank, a long time Vice President of Newport Creamery. He was President of the Newport Lions Club of which he was an active member for 75 years. He was the President of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce and Co-Chairman of the Newport County YMCA Building Fund for its current location in Middletown. He was a member of the Owls, the Newport Preservation Society and supporter of many other local organizations. He was a 1934 graduate of Rogers High School.
