Charles C. Coons, Jr

Middletown, RI - Charles C. Coons, Jr. Chuck, Senior Chief Storekeeper, USN Ret. of Middletown, RI, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at home with his family by his side.He was the husband of Ann MacDougall Coons. Born in Boston, MA on April 2, 1939, he was the son of the late Charles C. and Helen Carr Coons.Chuck joined the U.S. Navy when he was 17 years old and served honorably for 21 years. His service included tours of duty on the USS Diamond Head, USS Interdictor, USS Entemedor, USS Orion, USS Rich, Naval Station Argentia, Newfoundland and Comstore Region NAS, Quonset Point, RI. Upon his retirement from active military service, Chuck graduated from Bryant College with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration and began a second career as Distribution Manager at Roger Williams Foods, Healthtex, Derecktor Shipyard and McLaughlin Research Corp. Besides his wife of 51 years, he is survived by his children, Charles C. Coons III and his wife Lisa of Santa Clarita, CA, Karen Rezendes and her fianc Hakan Durudogan of Portsmouth, RI, and Kathy Soares and her husband John of Swansea, MA, his sisters Mary Lu Matchen and her husband Gene of Davie, FL, Catherine McDermott and her husband Richard of Royal Palm Beach, FL, Margaret Schuler of Royal Palm Beach, FL, Eileen Deegan and her husband James of St. Petersburg, FL, his brothers Daniel Coons and his wife Mary of Gainesville, FL and Timothy Coons and his wife Linda of Atlanta, GA, his grandchildren Taylor and Jamie Coons, Chase Turner Garcia, Sarah and Hunter Rezendes and Kelly Soares, as well as several nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by his daughter Colleen Audrey and his son-in-law Scott Rezendes.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2011, from 4-7PM in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Friday, October 14, 2011, 9:00AM in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.Burial to follow in St. Columba Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VNS Hospice of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871 or to the American Cancer Society of Rhode Island, 931 Jefferson Blvd., Suite 3004, Warwick, RI 02886.
