Wiliamsburg, - Charles E. Gillen, Jr., 79, of 3477 Hunters Ridge Wiliamsburg, VA, formerly of Thurston Avenue, Newport, RI and Rosedale Court, Middletown, RI, died Sunday, September 7, 2003 at Riverside Regional Health Care Center Williamsburg, VA.He was the husband of Eleanor Popple Gillen. Born in Schenectady, NY on May 10, 1924, he was the son of the late C. Edward and Mynetta Ten Broeck Baldwin Gillen.Mr. Gillen was a resident of Newport, RI for 55 years and retired from the New England Telephone Telegraph Co. after 33 years. He was also a lineman in Building 76 as a PBX installer on the Naval Base. While living in Newport, he was a former member of St. Paul?s Methodist Church. After his retirement he moved to Florida and then in 1994 to Williamsburg, VA where his daughter lives. They were active members of Williamsburg United Methodist Church. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. Mr. Gillen was a former golfer, enjoyed working and making things out of wood for his family and he also traveled internationally with his wife. Besides his wife of 56 years, he is survived by three daughters Linda Garvin of Tenafly, NJ, Janet Dannecker and husband Russell of Foster, RI, and Karen Red and her husband Charles of Williamsburg, VA, three grandchildren James McKinley Garvin and his wife Emily of Cape Elizabeth, ME, Katharine Gillen Garvin of London, England, and Max Gillen Dannecker of Foster, RI, and his cousin Caryl Gopfert of Palo Alto, CA.He was the grandfather of the late Samuel Charles Dannecker and Charles Jacob Dannecker. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2003, at 3:30 PM in Middletown Cemetery, Corner Of Turner And Wyatt Roads, Middletown.
