RDML Charles H. Chip Griffiths, Jr., USN Ret. passed March 2, 2008 at his home in Middletown, RI surrounded by his loving family following a courageous 19 month battle with brain cancer. A 32 year Naval veteran and 1971 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Chip served on a number of submarines to include his command of the USS Pittsburgh SSN-720, Submarine Squadron TWO in Groton, Connecticut, and Submarine Group NINE in Bangor, Washington. Other assignments included the Joint Staff J-5 directorate and USSTRATCOM. Chip cherished his military service and the friendship and bonds he formed with those he had the distinct pleasure to serve with. After retirement in 2002, Chip joined Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems in Portsmouth, RI. He is survived by his loving bride of 34 years Cynthia Bearden Griffiths, his son Brandon Griffiths, his wife Elizabeth, and grandson William Charles; his son Matthew Griffiths; his parents VADM Charles H. Griffiths, USN Ret. and Barbara Felton Griffiths; his brother Scott A. Griffiths, his wife, Therese, and their children Devin and Megan; his sister Leslie Franson, her husband, Jim, and their children, Arno, Kristen, and Greg. He is also survived by his dog Derek Jeter. A consummate gentleman, scholar, husband, father, and grandfather, Chip leaves a legacy of uncompromising ethics, a love for the sea, and a passion for the New York Yankees. Services will be held Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 10:00 am at Calvary Methodist Church, 200 Turner Rd, Middletown, RI. Chip will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, March 14, 2008 at 11:00 am following a celebration of his life.
