Middletown, RI - Charles McIntyre, 89, formerly of Middletown, RI, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Anne Lichtel McIntyre. Born in Philadelphia, PA on May 18, 1919, he was the son of the late Charles and Marguerite McIntyre.Mr. McIntyre graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School with a degree in economics. He was accepted into the School of Law, Temple University, but elected to serve in World War II as a Naval Officer. He participated in twenty-eight crossings of the North Atlantic on convoy duty and also the invasion of Sicily and North Africa. After the war he returned to civilian life but remained active in the naval reserve. Mr. McIntyre returned to active duty at the time of the Korean Conflict and ultimately retired from active duty as a Commander in 1957. There after he was employed by the federal government as manager of the Commissioned Officers Mess Closed and BOQ until his retirement in 1978. He is survived by his son Jerry L. McIntyre and his wife Tina, as well as his three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was loved by all who knew him and will be sorely missed. Burial service will be private and it is requested that in lieu of flowers a donation be made in his memory to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
