Charles Oliveira

Charles E. Oliveira, 90, of Middletown, RI, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2025.

Charlie was born in Newport, RI and was the son of the late Alvaro and Mary (Braga) Oliveira. He was the husband of Mary E. (Cooney) Oliveira, whom he was married to for 57 years.

Charlie had an insatiable work ethic. He started in his youth working part time at the Town Club Soda Company which was located on Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown. He then went on to work for the First National Stores where he worked for 16 years and then at night, he worked at Rod O'Hanley's Mobile Station in Newport.

He was a graduate of Rogers High School, class of 1952. He proudly served in the U.S. Army for 6 years, starting in 1957. In October of 1967 he started working for the U.S. Postal Service serving both Newport and Middletown as a letter carrier for 28 years before retiring in 1995. Charlie's inability to sit still brought him to Memorial Funeral Home where he worked during his retirement for several years.

Charlie was a parishioner of Jesus Saviour Church and loved belonging to several local organizations including the North End Club in Middletown, Newport Knights of Columbus, Council 256, NALC Branch 57, NARFE, the local chapter of the AARP and the Middletown Senior Center.

Charlie is survived by his wife Mary and his daughters Mary Beth Oliveira of Middletown and Julie Carlisle (Patrick) of Newport. He also leaves his siblings Antone Oliveira of Newport, George Oliveira of Portsmouth and Emily Whealton Oliveira of Boynton Beach, FL.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Alvaro Oliveira, Richard Oliveira and his sister Gloria Oliveira.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Monday, March 31, 2025, at 10:00 AM in Jesus Saviour Church, 509 Broadway, Newport. Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.
