Charles Wayne Chittam, 64, of Shangri-La Lane, Middletown, passed away at home on Saturday, October 13, 2007.He was the husband of Linda Harkin Chittam.Born in Athens, Alabama on January 22, 1943, he was a son of the late Charles G. and Hattie Mae McElyea Chittam.Mr. Chittam was a retired veteran of both the US Navy and the US Army having served during the Vietnam War. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post #4487 in Middletown and enjoyed organizing and playing in Pinochle Tournaments, golfing and fishing.In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his children, Amy Scherg, Melanie Smith, Beth Chittam, and Tracey Chittam, all of Athens, AL, Michael Baker of Middletown, RI, Heather Baker of Newport, RI and Haley Woolhouse of Odessa, TX, his siblings, Tracie Slayton, Cathy Beaslay and Larry Chittam, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.He was the father of the late Jeffrey Chittam and brother of the late Billy Chittam.Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 19, 2007 from 6-7 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a V.F.W. Ritual at 7 pm.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 222 Richmond St., Providence, RI 02903 or to the Diabetes Foundation of RI, 209 Cottage St., Pawtucket, RI 02860.
