Charlotte S. Monk, 83, formerly of Gibbs Ave, Newport, died Saturday, May 14, 2011 after a courageous 6 year battle with pulmonary fibrosis, at the John Clarke Health Care Center, Middletown, RI. She was the wife of the late George W. Monk.Born in Newport, RI on October 30, 1927, she was the daughter of the late John and Elsa Anderson Gibson.Charlotte Gibson grew up in Newport and graduated from Rogers High School in 1945. She then completed her professional education at the Truesdale School of Nursing in Fall River, and began her career at Truesdale Hospital as a Registered Nurse. On April 14, 1951 she married George Monk and they began their family, with Pamela, John and Richard. Charlotte returned to work as a nurse at the former Baptist Home in Newport, which became the present John Clarke Nursing Home in Middletown. Mrs. Monk retired as Director of Nursing after 30 years at John Clarke.Charlotte was an active member of the Middletown Baptist Church where she served as Church Clerk, sang in the choir, and ran their soup kitchen. In her free time, Charlotte LOVED bowling, with her family and friends, in leagues in Newport and on the Navy base.She is survived by a daughter Pamela Monk Kopplin of Portsmouth, RI, a son, Rev. Richard A. Monk and his wife Barbara of Ledyard, CT, a daughter-in-law Juanita Monk, and Charlottes beloved grandchildren Bethany Kopplin Gilpin of Portsmouth, RI, Courtney Susan Kopplin of Cambridge, MA, Adam Gibson Kopplin of Salem, MA, Ian Richard Monk of New York, NY, Caitlin Monk Sharp of Los Angeles, CA, and four great-grandchildren, John, Abby, Noah and Ella Gilpin. She also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by son John F. Monk.A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, May 22 at 2:00 pm in Middletown Baptist Church, 1818 West Main Road, Middletown.
