Chief Donald L. Homen, MPD Ret., 82, of Middletown, died peacefully on Wednesday July 1, 2015, at Newport Hospital.Born on September 3, 1932 in Middletown, RI, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Silvia) Homen. He was the former husband of Dorothy (Pollitt) Russo and the late Carolyn (Stafford) Homen.A lifelong resident of Middletown he graduated from Rogers High School in Newport in 1953. He served in the US Army Reserve from 1951 to 1960. Donald joined the Middletown Police Department in 1953, and was promoted to Sergeant in 1960, becoming Deputy Police Chief later that same year. He was appointed Chief of Police Department in 1963. Donald was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island School of Criminology in 1955. He was hand appointed by J. Edgar Hoover to attend the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy 76th Class in Washington, DC in 1965. He also was a graduate of the New England Institute of Law Enforcement Management at Babson College in 1968. He was affiliated with the Fraternal Order of Police, New England Association of Chiefs of Police, past President of the RI Police Chiefs Association in 1972, International Association of Chiefs of Police and the FBI National Academy Associations. After his retirement he served as Director of Security at Clarendon Court in Newport for several years and was a personal bodyguard for multiple celebrities.In his spare time, he enjoyed Caribbean cruises and dining out with his late wife. He was an avid NE Patriots fan who often attended preseason practices. He loved the Ocean Drive, lobster rolls at Easton's Beach and Frosty Freeze.He is survived by his three daughters, Christine Homen of Naples, FL, Cynthia Homen of Portsmouth and Jill Homen of Newport, RI, and his two grandchildren Katelyn and Noah Burcak.He was predeceased by his brother, retired Middletown Police Sergeant Frank G. Homen.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 5, 2015, from 1:00-4:00pm, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.A private burial will be held at Highland Memorial Park, Johnston, RI.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Middletown Police Officers Donation Fund, 9 Berkeley Avenue, Middletown, RI 02842, or http://www.middletownri.com/government/8/police-department.
