Clarie Toppins

Newport, RI - Clarie Toppins, 77, of 27 Burnside Avenue, Newport, RI, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Edith Ketter Toppins. Born in New Holland, NC on August 12, 1931, he was the son of the late Edwin and Maggie Patterson Toppins.Mr. Toppins worked as a custodian for Sodexho Corp for 13 years, retiring in 1991. He also worked for many years at Del Neros Cleaners and for Waste Management. He was a member of Community Baptist Church, where he also served on the usher board. He is survived by his children, Larry Toppins of Richmond, VA, Pamela Toppins of Portsmouth, VA and Denise Toppins of Newport, RI, his brother James Ray Toppins of New Church, VA and his sisters Mary Clarke of Jamaica, NY and Sara Williams of Baltimore, MD.He was the brother of the late Edwin Toppins, Bernie Toppins and Margaret Toppins. His funeral will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at 1:00 pm in Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard, Newport.Burial will be private.Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 13, 2009, from 6-8 in the Community Baptist Church.
