Clayton W. Allen, who lived at Atria Aquidneck Place in Portsmouth, RI, passed away on November 11, 2010 at the age of 98. Clayton was born on June 12, 1912 in Scranton, PA. He lived most of his adult life in Sea Cliff, NY where he made significant contributions to the community, including Scout Master, Properties and Finance Director of the Sea Cliff United Methodist Church, Meals on Wheels Volunteer and Chairman of the Sea Cliff Museum. Clayton was an avid sailor and recreational fisherman, and was a member of the Sea Cliff Yacht Club and Coast Guard Auxiliary. In 1991 the Sea Cliff Civic Association presented Clayton with the White Cap Award for the many years he spent helping to make Sea Cliff a great place to live. Clayton retired from Grumman Corporation in 1979, and was particularly proud of his work on the Lunar Expeditionary Module LEM. Fulfilling President John F. Kennedys goal of reaching the Moon by the end of the 1960s, the Grumman LEM Team helped design and build the Apollo 11 space craft, landing on the Moon on July 16, 1969. Today the LEM descent stage remains on the moon with a plaque dedicated to the Grumman LEM Team, including Clayton Allen. Clayton was blessed in his marriage of over 60 years to Mildred Erickson Allen who passed away in 2001. He has two children; Todd Allen of Williamsburg, VA and Jane Hall of Glen Pool, OK. He has seven grandchildren, four great grand children and one great, great grandchild.A private family memorial and celebration of life service will be held by Claytons family.
