CMDR. Richard F. Dugan Jr. USN (retired) Little Compton, RI -CMDR Richard F. Dugan Jr. USN (retired), 81, of Little Compton, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2013. He was the loving husband of Patricia Ann (McGill) Dugan to whom he had been married for 56 years. Born in Newport, RI on July 20, 1932, he was the son of the late Col. Richard F. Dugan, USA and Kathryn (Lawton) Dugan. Dick was educated in the Newport School system through his sophomore year at Rogers High School, after which he and his mother joined his father at Fort Bragg, NC., where he graduated from Fayetteville High School. He received his Bachelors Degree and his commission in the Navy from the College of the Holy Cross, in Worcester, MA and his Masters Degree from Bryant College. During his years in the Navy, dick received many awards and medals, but was most proud of the Bronze Star with "Combat V" for his service in Viet Nam. When he returned from Viet Nam, he and his family resided in Newport, where he coached in the Newport National Little League. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for Logicon and then joined the faculty at Johnson Whales where he taught Economics. He and his family then moved to Portsmouth, where he coached and ultimately became president of the Portsmouth Babe Ruth League. He was also a long- time member and president of the Portsmouth High School Athletic Boosters Association and one of the "chain gang". He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Little Compton, the American Legion Post 37 in Little Compton, and also a member of the MOAA, DAV, VFW and the FRA. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Richard F. Dugan III of, MT, Kevin P. Dugan USMC Ret and his wife Lisa, of South Carolina, Raymond M. Dugan and his wife Alison of Somerset, MA, and Sean M. Dugan and his wife Cheryl of Bristol, RI, and nine grandchildren, a nephew, 3 nieces and his faithful companion, his dog Mackenzie.He was the brother of the late Cathleen "Kay" OConnell and Mary Malone, who were both from Newport.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2013, from 4-7pm in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth. His funeral will be held on Monday, September 9, 2013, at 9AM, from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM, in St. Catherines Church, 74 Simmons Road, Little Compton, RI.Burial, with military honors, will be in Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery, Willow Avenue, Little Compton.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to The Robert Potter League for Animals PO Box 812 Newport, RI 02840, or to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
