Col. Richard Stedman Brownell Ret

August 13, 1947 — November 30, 2013

Richard S. Brownell (August 13th 1947 - November 30th 2013), the son of the late Dr. Henry W. Brownell and Sally B. (Jones) Brownell, passed Saturday evening with his cherished wife by his side. He was the loving husband of Doreen R. (Benway) Brownell, and father to their four children, spouses, and "Papa" to their twelve grandchildren, including: Seth Kara (Harpool) Brownell and their children Wyatt, Annalee, Penelope, and Emelia; Brooke (Brownell) Rich Loechinger, and their children Grace, Richard, Evangeline, and James; Benjamin Lynne (Silveira) Brownell, and their children Jillian, Benjamin, Jonathan, and Lauren; and Matthew Hanh (Huynh) Brownell. He is survived by his siblings: Bruce N. Brownell of Fitchburg, WI, and Nancy J. Meyer; Rebecca W. (Brownell) Russ of Lumberton, NC, and Donald R. Russ; William B. Brownell of Newport, RI, and his wife Carla (Barton) Brownell; and Peter H. Brownell of Vienna, VA, and his wife Susan (Van Lierde) Brownell; and Kathleen (Dunn) Brownell, wife of the late Stephen B. Brownell.He was a native of Newport, and a Rogers High School graduate, class of 1965. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1969, the same year he joined the United States Air Force and married his wonderful wife. During his military career he obtained a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Western New England College. He served 26 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Colonel in 1995, and continued to work in contracting for Raytheon another 14 years. His work and travels took him across the United States and back, where he was able to retire, settling his family in Portsmouth, RI. His work ethic and devotion to his career, church, and community will be remembered. Throughout the course of his life, he served diligently in the military, and faithfully as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His religious service included a variety of leadership and teaching capacities. He also served as an ambassador of the LDS faith in the Aquidneck Island Clergy Association, which group works to bring the different faiths of our community together. He was a member of the Newport Genealogical Society and Sons of the American Revolution.Richard's greatest achievement and source of pride is reflected in his family, to which he gave endless devotion, love, and encouragement. His focus was on their success and happiness. He was the perfect example of selfless love. He is adored by the love of his life, best friend, and sweetheart, Doreen, as he is by his children and grandchildren who warmly reminisce their time spent together. His kind heart, sincerity and Christ-like qualities will continue in our minds, hearts and lives. Calling Hours will be at Hambly Funeral Home, 30 Red Cross Ave., Newport, RI on Wednesday, December 4th 2013, from 5:00-8:00PM. There will also be a Memorial Service at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 177 Miantonomi Ave., Middletown, RI on Thursday, December 5th 2013 at 10:00AM.In lieu of flowers, please donate to: Wounded Warrior Project, Smile Train or LDS Philanthropies.
