Daniel J. Condry

Daniel J. Condry, 81, of Middletown, RI, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2016 at Newport Hospital surrounded by his loving family.He was born on February 5, 1935 in Fall River, MA, the son of the late James W. and Janet (Hart) Condry. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Kathleen (Hughes) Condry.Dan was a career man in the hotel business involved with sales of conventions and weddings for almost 25 years. That time was spent employed at the former Newport Motor Inn in Middletown; and the Hotel Viking in Newport. Following his retirement from sales, he went on to work on the Newport Naval Station for the MWR program office. He retired in 1996. During his early retirement years, Dan was employed by the Newport Recreation Department as a greeter for private bathhouse renters at Easton's Beach. He was a 1953 graduate of Rogers High School. Dan was dedicated to youth sports in Newport for many years. He was a past president of Newport Little League Baseball, Newport Pop Warner Football and Newport Babe Ruth Baseball. He, as Newport Babe Ruth President, was instrumental in hosting a New England Regional Tournament in 1972 at Cardines Field He enjoyed the fundraising part of youth sports and organized a radio-thon from which the funds raised sent a basketball team from the Newport Boy's Club on a trip to Phoenix, AZ in 1969. "Gramps", as he was lovingly called, was blessed with very athletic grandchildren. He could always be seen at their sporting events cheering them on. He was a huge NASCAR fan and enjoyed watching all sporting events on TV with his wife. Dan was great for telling jokes and had a great sense of humor. He is survived by his son, Michael Condry and his wife Monica, his daughters, Karen Norbury and her husband John, and Patricia Condry all of Middletown, RI and Elizabeth MacFarlane and her husband Scott of Virginia Beach, VA, his loving grandchildren, Erin Condry, Daniel "DJ" Condry, Cameron Condry, Michelle Norbury, Steven Norbury and Kyle MacFarlane. Mr. Condry is also survived by his sister Jane Wood and her husband Cecil of Fernandian Beach, FL, his brother James Condry and his wife Dorothy of Somerset, MA, his niece Lissa Smith, his nephew and godson Patrick Condry, his nephew's Donald Ashton and Jeffrey Ashton and a great nephew Riley Miller. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Dr. David Cunningham and Dr. Christopher Luttmann for their many years of dedicated care and compassion for Dan. Also our thanks to his "guardian angels," the nurses at the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and during his final days, a special thank you to the Newport Hospital ICU Staff.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 18, 2016, from 4-7pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. His funeral will be held on Friday, August 19, 2016 at 8am from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00AM in St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.
