Portsmouth, RI - Daniel J. Dickinson, Jr., 78, of 512 Boyds Lane Portsmouth, died Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at St. Annes Hospital Fall River, MA.He was the husband of Joan McCoomb Dickinson of Portsmouth. Born in Fall River, MA on August 17, 1926, he was the son of the late Daniel and Agnes Norton Dickinson. Mr. Dickinson served in the United States Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater aboard the destroyer escort USS Tills as a Quartermaster 2nd Class. After the Navy he began a varied career on local waters, first with New England Dredge and Dock in Fall River. He also worked on tugs for Providence Steamboat Company where he became Captain of the tug Gaspee. He was the owner and Captain of the Fishing Vessel ?Restless? fishing out of Pt. Judith for 20 years. After retiring from fishing he worked as a manager of Manchester Seafood in Tiverton. He then was an independent commercial trucker for C-Line Inc of Warwick, RI. Mr. Dickinson was a member of the Pt. Judith Fishermans Coop Association, a life member of the Seaconnett Sportsman Club, and a member of the Destroyer Escort Association. He loved the water and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed reading, bicycling and cooking. Besides his wife of 54 years, he is survived by five daughters Amy Chamard of Portsmouth, RI, Hope Dickinson of Quincy, MA, Dayle Dickinson of Hull, MA, Joan Dickinson Day of Torrance, CA, and Martha Richardson of Annapolis, MD, twelve grandchildren Meredith OHayre, Patrick OHayre, Emily Day, Laura Day, Gregory Day, Mary Chamard, Zachary Chamard, Madeline Chamard, Michael Richardson Jr., Jane Richardson, Abigail Richardson and Claire Richardson, his great grandson Timothy O?Hayre and several cousins, nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held on Monday, January 31, 2005 at 9:00am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00am in St. Anthonys Church, 2836 East Main Road, Portsmouth.
