Daniel W Marvelle, 89, of Newport, RI, died Thursday, December 22, 2011. He was the husband of Janet Smith Marvelle to whom he was married for 68 years.Born in Newport on March 13, 1922, he was the son of Everett and Catherine Nyhan Marvelle. He attended Rogers High School. Mr. Marvelle served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Catoctin in the European Theatre when the ship had served as headquarters for the planning and invasion of Southern France.He was employed for many years as the Plant Manager at Egans Laundry in Newport before purchasing Goodwill Cleaners in Middletown which he owned and managed for many years. In recent years he was employed in the properties department at the Preservation Society of Newport County. He was a member of the Elks Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a former member of the Newport Ham Radio Club.Besides his wife, he leaves three children, Daniel W. Marvelle, Jr. of Portsmouth, Robert C. Marvelle and his wife Lois of Newport, and Jane M. Green and her husband Gordon of Newport, his sister Elsie Lawless of Newport, six grandchildren, Daniel Marvelle, Gordon Green, Robert Marvelle, Amanda Gassaway, Ian Green, and Jennie Marvelle, eight great grandchildren, Brenton and Camrynn Marvelle, Samuel, Micha and Jude Gassaway, Liam and Dylan Marvelle, and Quinlan Green, many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Nikki.He was preceded in death by his siblings, Everett Marvelle, Ward Marvelle, Claire Betty Marvelle, Lillian Mahoney, James Marvelle, Paul Marvelle, and his great granddaughter, Hannah Gassaway.A true gentleman who loved his family, he was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Mr. Marvelle was very proud of his Irish heritage and enjoyed many trips to Ireland to visit family.His funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at 10:30am, in the Emmanuel Church, Dearborn and Spring Street, Newport, RI.In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the Robert Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.
