David Allen Chaves

David Allen Chaves, 71, of Portsmouth, husband of Mary E. (Doyle) Chaves for 41 years, died December 22, 2012 at Newport Hospital.Born on June 2, 1941 in Fall River, MA, son of the late Joseph and Annie (Gracia) Chaves and father of his dearly loved daughter, the late Kelly Ann Chaves.David graduated De La Salle Academy, 1960. He served in the US Air Force as a Nurse Recruiter, General's Aide and cook, retiring as a Master Sargeant. He was stationed in NH, SD, FL, Labrador, Iran and Turkey. David received, the Air Force Commendation Award three times, and the Air Force Meritorious Service Award. After his time in the service he joined the family business at Bristol Ferry Flowers and Chaves Gardens. David loved to cook, BBQ, ride his motorcycle, grow flowers, enjoy the Patriots, nature, animals, dwarf rabbits, miniature horses and his two mini daschaunds. He was a lifetime member of Seaconnet Sportsman's Club and co-owner of Bounce About Co.; Moonwalk Rentals.Besides his wife of 41 years, he leaves his siblings Robert J. Chaves of Portsmouth, Joseph Chaves Jr. of Newport, Ronald A. Chaves of Portsmouth, RI, Barbara A. Chaves of Perryville, RI, Joan C. Closson of Warren, RI and Cynthia C. Martin of Portsmouth, his nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, his in-laws of the Doyle family, his three godchildren, Corinna Chaves, Corey Martin and Shevonne Cavanaugh and his friends Clem Rego, Phil Amaral, Kevin Plourde and Dr. David A. Johnson.Funeral services and military honors were private.
