David Everett Dennis, 83, of New Bedford, Mass, formerly of Newport, RI and Acushnet, MA died on January 10, 2025. He was the husband of the late Diane Tripp. Born in Newport, RI on October 23, 1941, he was the son of the late Cletus and Anita (Westall) Dennis.
David grew up in Newport, RI and served in the US Coast Guard during the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he began work seeking out his career. He raised four boys with their mother Nancy. He was active with the Boy Scouts and First Presbyterian Church of Newport. His next chapter began when he took a job with Polaroid and moved to Tiverton, RI before settling in Acushnet, MA. Here he was able to use his knack for fixing everything, and utilized a benefit of Polaroid to earn his degree in engineering from Northeastern University. With his engineering degree he worked on and designed the pneumatic robotics automation at the film manufacturing facility eventually moving into a management role. During his time at Polaroid, David met a chemist named Diane, and they enjoyed the last 30 years together, until her death earlier this year.
Throughout his life, David enjoyed being outdoors. One of his favorite activities was auto racing, especially hill climbing, autocross and track day time trials. This became an activity he enjoyed with his sons and grandchildren, spending weekends camping in NH and VT during race events and enjoying the camaraderie with other drivers and track workers. Another favorite spot that was close to his heart was spending summers at Horseneck Beach in Westport, MA. Every summer he opened a camp for him and his family to enjoy. This was a favorite place of his. He also enjoyed membership at the Acushnet Rod and Gun Club, and participated in many billiards events over the years, becoming a very skilled pool player.
David is survived by his four sons, David C. Dennis (Claudette) of Middletown, Kevin Dennis (Marlo) of Tiverton, Brian Whalen-Dennis (Jenny) of Plymouth, MA, and Allan Dennis (Cara) of Warwick, and their mother Nancy Quinn of Newport, his seven grandchildren, Josh Dennis (Amanda), Morgan, Maura, Dylan (Rebecca), Zoe (Bryan), Daniel (Sarah) and David Michael (Sarah) and four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
