Portsmouth, RI - David Hewlett Lane, 71, of 14 Mary Lane, Portsmouth, RI, died Monday, October 15, 2007 at home. He was the husband of Doris F. Lande Lane.Born in Flushing, NY, on March 13, 1936, he was the son of Edith H.K. Sanford Pigot of Santa Rosa, CA, and the late William B. Lane.Mr. Lane had worked as a technical writer and editor for Seacorp of Middletown for 5 years, retiring in July 2007. A veteran of the US Navy, Mr. Lane served during the Korean Conflict. He also served on the Mobile Training Team to the Turkish Navy Headquarters; as supervisor of sonar repair at the U.S. Naval facility in Guantanamo Bay Cuba; as an instructor in electronics and sonar systems maintenance at the Fleet Sonar School in Key West, FL; and was one of the first selected for the Personnel Exchange Program, assigned to the Hellenic Naval Station Arsenal, Salamis, Greece. Mr. Lane received an MBA from Bryant University and an MA from Salve Regina University. A skillful target shooter, he was a member of the National Rifle Association and the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons David W. Lane of Boston, MA, and Eric M. Lane of Denver, CO; two brothers John M. Lane of Concord, CA, and Alan B. Lane of Healdsburg, CA; and a granddaughter Alexa J. Lane of Brookline, MA. He was also the brother of the late William B. Lane, Jr.A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 19, 2007, at 2pm, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Burial will be private.Calling hours are omitted.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Charity of Ones Choice.
