Middletown, RI - Dean Cavanough Scanlon, 66, of Middletown, RI, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, RI. He was the husband of Carol Ann Livesey Scanlon. Born in Fall River, MA on July 21, 1945, he was the son of the late George and Irene Petit Scanlon.Mr. Scanlon was born in Fall River, Massachusetts. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 years old serving for seven years. He met his wife Carol and married on June 30, 1973. He then re-enlisted in January of 1978 and continued to serve in the Navy for a total of 24 years. He retired as a Chief Gunners Mate GMGC. Dean traveled the globe, visiting the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean while serving on the USS Capodanno, the USS Glover and also the USS Independence. In retirement he worked for the Navy Exchange and most recently worked at St. Georges School for the last 8 years. Mr. Scanlon was a former member of the VFW in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Dean loved to read, build models and enjoyed being in Newport walking the Cliff Walk. Most of all he loved his family. He is survived by wife Carol A. Scanlon of Middletown, RI, his son Kyle T. Scanlon and his wife, Ashley Kestler-Scanlon of Portsmouth, RI, his daughter Holly C. Campano and her husband, Michael of North Providence, RI. He also leaves his brother Thomas Scanlon of Arizona, his granddaughter Lacey C. Campano and grandson, Trevor T. Scanlon, as well as his sister-in-law Lori C. Guillette and his nephew Zachary L. Guillette of Tiverton.He was the brother of the late Rita, Irene, Joan and Della and his brother-in-law Henry G. Guillette III. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, April 17 from 4:00-7:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport with a memorial service to follow at 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rhode Island Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center, 593 Eddy Street, Providence, RI 02903.
