Middletown, RI - Donald E. Wimbiscus, 90, of 303 Valley Road, Middletown, RI, formerly of 81 Ellery Avenue, Middletown, died Thursday, September 8, 2011 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI.He was the husband of Iva B. Button Wimbiscus. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on January 3, 1921, he was the son of the late Edward and Zella Mahoney Wimbiscus.Mr. Wimbiscus was a World War II veteran in the US Army Air Force and subsequent service in the US Air Force Reserve. He was a Pearl Harbor Survivor in Hawaii, where he was wounded in the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was also in the 8th Air Force in Europe and later a Prisoner of War in Germany. Mr. Wimbiscus was a graduate of RCA Institutes and also attended the University of Rhode Island. He finally retired from his civil service job in 1981 from the Department of Defense, after 33 years. He was active in the US Power Squadrons and the second Division of the Air Force Association. Mr. Wimbiscus was a member of the Middletown Historical Society and Friends of Middletown Library. He was a lifetime member of both Disabled American Veterans RI Chapter 2 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4487 in Middletown. Mr. Wimbiscus was a former communicant and usher at St. Marys Church in Newport. Besides his wife of 58 years, he is survived by his children, Karen A. Dean of Warwick, RI, Bruce A. Wimbiscus of Hicksville, Long Island, NY, and Ralph A. Wimbiscus of Newark, VT, and seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter, and his sister Norma J. Foran of Williamsville, NY Calling hours will be held on Sunday, September 11 from 4:00-7:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Monday, September 12 at 10:00am, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am, in St. Lucy?s Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown. Burial with military honors will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one?s choice.
