Portsmouth, - Donald James Alfonso, 60, of 1272 West Main Road Portsmouth, formerly of 50 President Avenue, Portsmouth, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at St. Annes Hospital Fall River, MA.He was the former husband of Janice Veronica Giblin Gannek of Warwick, RI. Born in Newport, RI on September 16, 1942, he was the son of the late Antone and Adelma M. Mello Alfonso. Mr. Alfonso was a 1960 graduate of Rogers High School. He was in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. Mr. Alfonso was the owner of the Wayside Barber Shop in Tiverton, RI for 40 years and he also worked at the Naval War College Barber Shop for 18 years. He was known as the ?Barber Angel? because he went to cut the hair of ill customers at hospitals and homes. He was an avid landscaper, and an avid lover of NASCAR and his own antique cars. Besides his former wife he is survived by three daughters Michele Elizabeth Clacherty of Warwick, RI, and Melissa Marie Alfonso and Alexandria Alfonso both of Portsmouth, RI, and two grandchildren. He was the brother of the late James Alfonso. His funeral will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2003, at 9:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Committal prayers will follow at the Atlantic Cremation Service, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.
