Doris M. Chartier, 82, of 20 Cottontail Drive, Portsmouth, RI, died Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown, RI.Born in Pawtucket, RI on October 31, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Louis J. and Alice Boler Chartier.Doris was a volunteer for 30 years at Maher Horticultural Center, a volunteer for the Rhode Island Special Olympics for 12 years, a co-chairperson for 9 years for the Rhode Island Muscular Dystrophy for Newport County. She also served on the Board of Directors for 4 years for the Maher Center of Newport County and the Newport County YMCA, she was always willing to volunteer to raise funds for various health organizations over the years. In her retirement, she began spending time in Wellington, FL, Palm Beach County, but that did not mean she wasnt going to be involved in her community. While living in Wellington, she served on the Board of Directors and Board of Governors for the Palm Beach Opera. Doris was also a real estate property manager for 40 years. A graduate of Rogers High School and Bryant College, she also enjoyed golf at Wanumetonomy CC, gardening and sewing.She is survived by her sons Daniel T. Malvey and his wife Cynthia of Middletown, RI, and Stephen L. Malvey of Portsmouth, RI, as well as her daughter Maryjane Walda and her husband Jon of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, as well as three grandchildren, Kevin, Kristyn, and Sean Malvey, and her sister Janet Chartier OHanley of Newport, RI and Naples, FL. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, from 10:00-11:00 am with a funeral service at 11:00 in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Rhode Island Special Olympics, 33 College Hill Road, Bldg 31, Warwick, RI 02886 or the James L. Maher Center, 120 Hillside Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.
