Middletown, RI - Doris M. Hollis Shaw, 85, of 52 Linden Street, died January 18, 2007 at Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she had been a resident in the Alzheimer?s unit since August 2002. She was the wife of Leon Maxwell Shaw. Born in Middletown, RI on September 27, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Sumner and Florence Banning Hollis.A graduate of Rogers High School and the Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing, Mrs. Shaw worked as a Registered Nurse in hospitals and doctors offices in Washington DC and Little Rock, Arkansas during World War II. From 1966 to 1972 she served as a private duty nurse in the homes of the wealthy. Mrs. Shaw was an active member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Newport from 1944 to 1990 serving as an Elder, a Deacon and on many committees. Later, at Newports Trinity Church 1990 to 2000 she was active in the womans Trinity Circle, served as a guide for tours of the church and organized an office reception service. She served as president of the Trigon Club which raised money for needy children. Her efforts for the Trigon Club included producing Guys and Dolls, South Pacific and several Minstrel Shows at Rogers High School. Mrs. Shaw was president of the Middletown Republican Womens Club. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution DAR and the Alden Kindred Society. Besides her husband of 62 years, she leaves a daughter, Nancy Shaw Burgess of Portsmouth, a son Brian W. Shaw of Orlando, Florida, two granddaughters, AnnDee McMahon Rinkel of Newport and Heather Lee McMahon of Alston, MA, and a niece, Patti Toppa of Newport. She was the sister of the late Sanford Hollis and Ruth Clifford. A Memorial service will be held on January 27, 2007, at 10:00am, in the First Presbyterian Church, Broadway, Newport, RI.
