Newport, - Dorothy Clark Harlow Chaplin, 78, of 1201 Capella South Goat Island Newport, died Sunday, August 31, 2003 at home.She was the wife of Rev. George Manton Chaplin. Born in Lowell, MA on December 31, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Harold Clark and Mildred E. Carpenter Harlow. Mrs.Chaplin moved to the Newport area in 1927 and attended Cranston Calvert, Mumford, and John Clark Schools. She graduated from Rogers High School in 1942. Mrs. Chaplin was active in several charitable activities. She was a past president of the Newport Hospital Auxillary, and a member and past president of the Middletown Garden Club, The Hazard Beach Association and the Trigon Club of Newport. After high school, she worked for her father at the Aquidneck Island Creamery as a bookkeeper. Later, she worked at the Bank of Newport for twenty five years holding various positions and rising to Assistant Vice-President of Operations after having completed several courses at the American Banking Institute. Mrs. Chaplin lived in Warren, RI, for 21 years, while her husband was Rector of St. Marks Episcopal Church. Rev and Mrs Chaplin were married on November 21, 1942 and had celerbrated their Sixtieth 60 Aniversary. She was a member of the Episcopal Church Women, as well as the ST. Martha Guild of the Church of the Holy Cross. Besides her husband of 60 years she is survived by three daughters Janet Skenfield of Murphys, CA, Christine Gavan of Newport, RI, and Susan Chaplin of Troy, MI, her Sally Craig of Middletown, RI, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.She was the mother of the late Jeffrey Chaplin who died on April 9, 1972, and the sister of the late Allen S. Harlow and Frances S. Alford. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, September 7, 2003, at 3:30pm in The Church of the Holy Cross, 1439 West Main Road, Middletown, RI. A private burial will be in St. Mary?s Episcopal Churchyard Portsmouth, RI in Portsmouth. Arrangements were made by the Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway Newport, RI.
