NEWPORT, RI - Dorothy F. Chace Mattos, 87, of 6 Barney Street, Newport, RI, died Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River, MA, peacefully with her family by her side.She was the wife of the late Arthur P. Mattos, to whom she was married to for almost 65 years until his death in 2004. This year would have marked their 70th wedding anniversary. Born in Portsmouth, RI on June 24, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Frank S. and Fannie L. Harvey Chace. As a young girl, Dottie worked at the former Jacks Market on Thames Street in Newport. After her marriage at age 18, her primary role in life was wife, mother, and homemaker. She was the pivotal center of the family and has impacted so many lives. She will be greatly missed. She loved to make crafts and crochet. She has made countless afghans for friends and family. She will be remembered for her Sunday dinners, annual backyard cookouts, elaborate holiday birthday celebrations, and her tireless devotion to her family and friends.She is survived by her children Arthur P. Mattos, Jr. and his wife Beth of Matthews, NC, Carolyn A. Sly of Newport, RI, Barbara M. Kemper and her husband Michael of Portsmouth, RI and Kathleen A. Bullock and her husband William of Norfolk, VA, her grandchildren William Clapper, III, Robert Clapper, Kathleen Worel, Carolyn Beebe, Arthur P. Mattos, III, Emily Mattos, Kayla Kemper, Kristen Kemper, Gregory Kemper and Garrett Kemper, eight great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.She was the sister of the late Charles S. Chace, Perry F. Chace, Myra L. Sullivan, Alma Cole and Annie B. Clark. Her funeral has been postponed due to inclement weather on Moonday until Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at 11:00 am in First Presbyterian Church, Broadway and Everett, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2009, from 4-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.
