Newport, RI - Dorothy Isabella Bric Carey, 93, of Spindrift, Ocean Avenue, Newport, RI, died Thursday, October 30, 2008 at home with her daughter by her side. She was the wife of the late Dr. John Edward Carey. Born in Newport, RI on October 12, 1915, she was the daughter of the late John T. and Marguerite Mulvey Bric. The eldest of four, she was a 1932 graduate of Rogers High School. At the age of 16, she went on to study Mathematics at Regis College in Weston, MA, where she was elected president of the student body, graduating in 1936. After graduation, she returned to Newport, to work at City Hall. She met Dr. Carey in 1941 when he was stationed in Newport with the US Navy and they were married in 1942 in Pensacola, FL, where he became a Naval Flight surgeon. Mrs. Carey spent most of her life in Newport, where she raised six children. She was a founding member of the Mosaic Club, and president of the Womens Auxiliary of the Newport Hospital. She had a life long interest in traveling and learning about other cultures, sponsoring an exchange student from Taiwan who lived with the family while she attended Salve Regina College and entertaining foreign nationals completing their internships at Newport Hospital. She and her husband represented Newport as the first official emissaries to the Black Ship Festival in Shimoda, Japan in 1961 and traveled around the world three times. In later years, she and her husband spent summers at a cottage they owned at Inch, County Kerry Ireland, overlooking Dingle Bay. Mrs. Carey was a watercolor artist who was known for her considerable charm and storytelling.She is survived by her children, Patricia C. Rowan of Clearwater, FL, John E. Carey, Jr. of Moraga, CA, Michael J. Carey of Bucharest, Romania, Thomas W. Carey of Clearwater, FL, Katherine Clifford of New Delhi, India and Jane E. Carey of Newport, RI, sixteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.She was the sister of the late John T. Bric, Anne V. Bric and Marguerite Bric Haley.Her funeral will be held on Monday, November 3, 2008, at 8:00 am from the Hambly Funeral Home, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am in St. Josephs Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, November 2, 2008, from 2-4 and 7-9 in the funeral home.
