Newport, RI ? Lt Jg Dorothy Lillian Parris, USN, Ret, 90, of Newport, RI, died Friday, August 18, 2006 at home. Born in Newport, RI, on November 12, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Ralph C. and Effie Walker Parris.Dorothy served in the Nurses Corp in the Navy during WWII from 1940 to 1944 and was advanced for Supervisor to Chief Nurse. While in the Navy she was stationed in Newport, RI, Philadelphia, PA, Norfolk Navy Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA and Camp Lejune, NC. She was a graduate of Rogers High School, and was captain of the girls basketball team from 1930 to 1932. She received championship medals for swimming and diving in a Newport contest in 1930 on the swimming team in the girls relay race held at the Roman Pool at Newport Beach sponsored by the American Athletic Union. She also attended the Newport Business School and graduated from the Newport Hospital School of Nursing in 1937. She worked for the Orlando Registry Health Center for 20 years from 1946 to 1966. Miss Parris was a Real Estate Agent for the former Jameson Agency in Orlando, FL. Miss. Parris was the Assistant Executive Secretary for the Florida State Nurses Asssociation and was a Registered Business Agent and Lobbyist for the Florida Nurses Assocation from 1957 to 1959. She worked for the Newport Naval Hosptial as a registered nurse until 1972. She was a member of the American Legion Auxillary, the Point Association, Edward King Senior Citizens Center and the Seamans Church Institute. She was a charter member of the National League for Nursing in 1952. Miss. Parris was a member of St. John?s Evangelist Church and had been active in the Womens Guild and the Altar Guild. She is survived by her caregiver Howard Shea of Portsmouth, RI. She was the sister of the late US Navy man Ralph C. ?Buddy? Parris Jr. who died in WWII. Her funeral will be held on Monday, August 21, 2006, at 11:00AM, in St. John The Evangelist, 61 Poplar Street, Newport. Burial will be in Island Annex Cemetery in Newport.
