- Dorothy Rose Whitford Frost, Ed.D., 91, of John Clarke Retirement Center, Middletown, formerly of Oakdale Road, North Kingstown, RI, died Sunday, June 9, 2002 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Army Chaplin William M. Frost, Lt. Col., USA. Born in Stockton, CA on March 13, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Carl Garfield Whitford and the late Claire Jane Rose Whitford.Dr. Frost was a Teacher and Educator for fifty years. She retired in 1983 from Tenafly Middle School, Tenafly, New Jersey as an English and Latin teacher, as well as a guidance counselor. She earned her BA in Languages from the University of Redlands, Redlands, California, her Masters of Education in English from Texas Western University, El Paso, Texas, and her doctorate degree in Education from the University of the Pacific, Stockton, California. She was also a writer of children?s books and articles for Christian publications, including the book entitled, Dad!, Why?d you leave me? about a ten year old coping with the death of his father, which is still in print. She moved to North Kingstown from New Jersey in 1983 and to the John Clarke Retirement Center in September 2001.She was a member of the United Congregational Church in Middletown, where she had served as a Deacon, originated the Altar Guild, was a member of Generations, was a member of the Board of Missions, a member and former Chairperson of the Hospitality and Decorating Commitees, and was a tireless caregiver to homebound members and friends of the church. She was also an avid reader, a talented pianist and she enjoyed traveling, gardening and cross stitching. She is survived by three sons Rev. William Mason Frost of Colchester, CT, Robert Mason Frost of West Warwick, RI, and John Mason Frost of Tiverton, RI; one daughter Elizabeth Joan Fowler of Staten Island, NY, 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Carl Whitford. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 29, at 3:00pm in the United Congretional Church, Valley Road at Green End Avenue, Middletown. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, with her husband.Memorial donations may be made to the Veterans of the Cross, c/o United Congregational Church, 524 Valley Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
