Dorothy W.C. Chase

Dorothy "Dot" Weaver Copeland Chase, 94, of Portsmouth, died at home peacefully on Wednesday, July 25th 2012 surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Herbert Manton Chase and the daughter of Norma Stanton Coggeshall and Clinton Babbit Copeland. Born at the Newport Hospital in 1918, she spent most of her life on Aquidneck Island, the majority of that time at Chase Farms. She was the sister of William Harvey Copeland and the late George Melvin Copeland. She is survived by her children, Penelope, Deana, Samuel, Sarah, and Harry; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Her son, Peter and grandson Hayden predeceased her.Dorothy was a farm wife and mother. She the first female vestry member and president of the Episcopal Church Women at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, past-president of the Portsmouth PTA, a member of the Republican Town Committee, the Historical Society, the Portsmouth Garden Club and an inaugural member of Portsmouth's Conservation Committee. She had a lifetime love of birds, and was active in the Audubon Society, an accomplished catch and release fly fisher, and a button and shell collector. Dorothy wrote two books, My Life and More of My Life. Her Bible and spiritual readings were the focus for her day. She would want to be remembered as a woman of abiding faith in God and Jesus Christ. This faith saw her cheerfully accepting and coping with her trials and aging.Calling hours will be Friday, July 27, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road , Portsmouth. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday July 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in St Mary's Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Tree Fund or the American Cancer Society.
