Douglas R. Kenney, Sr., USN, (Ret.), 95, of Portsmouth, RI, and of Lyndonville, VT, passed away at home on April 6, 2025. He was the husband of Rhonda (Nutting) Kenney and the late Margaret (Mills) Kenney.
Born in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late Douglas and Ada (Banks) Kenney. Douglas lived a life characterized by service, dedication, and love.
Douglas proudly served in the United States Navy, enlisting in an era marked by commitment and valor. He reached the esteemed rank of Petty Officer First Class before retiring in 1991 after many years of honorable service. Following his military career, Douglas continued to exemplify dedication as an Administrative Officer with the U.S. Navy Department of Morale Welfare and Recreation.
Beyond his military and professional accomplishments, Douglas was a vibrant member of his community. He was a 32nd Degree Mason with St. Johns #1, and actively participated in the Scottish Rite and Shriners International. His camaraderie extended to his life membership in the BPOE Newport Elks Lodge 104, the VFW Post 4487 in Middletown, the Moose Lodge 1776 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, as well as being a proud member of the National Rifle Association.
He found joy in the company of his family, often traveling between Portsmouth, RI, and Lyndonville, VT, where he cherished time at his camp in Vermont and embraced the outdoors. His retirement was filled with fond memories spent fishing and golfing at Clarks Harbor in Nova Scotia, a place that brought him much happiness. His 4th of July parties, with bonfires and fireworks, were a time when family and friends gathered for food, fun, and games which created many wonderful memories for all of us.
Mr. Kenney is survived by his wife Rhonda, his children; Dianna (Richard Lisi) L. Hartley, of West Warwick, RI, Doreen (Vincent) L. Bruce, of Plattsmouth, NE, Deborah (Fred) L. Somerlot, of Plain City, OH, Douglas R. Kenney Jr., of West Warwick, RI, Duncan R. Kenney, of Ohio, and his stepsons; Michael (Heather) Boivin, of Lyndonville, VT, Joe (Jamie) Boivin, of Lyndonville, VT. He additionally leaves 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret (Mills) Kenney.
As we remember Mr. Kenney, we celebrate a life filled with service, love, and a profound commitment to family and community. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, and unwavering support for his family and friends.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth RI 02871. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM in the funeral home.
Burial will take place on Friday, April 18, 2025, at 1:00 PM in Trinity Cemetery, East Main Road, Portsmouth RI.
