Dr. Paul C. Houston

Middletown, RI - Paul C. Houston, devoted surgeon, husband and father, passed away Sunday, August 21, 2011. He was the beloved husband of Dolores Mello Houston of 50 years. Dr. Houston was born in Plymouth, Maine on March 1, 1921 he was the son of the late Albro H. and Bessie W. Houston.Dr. Houston graduated from Maine Central Institute Prep School; Bowden College Phi Beta Kappa, Brunswick, ME. He attended Medical School at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Interned at Philadelphia General Hospital, served as Captain Medical Corps in the United States Army, he did his surgical residency at Philadelphia General Hospital; his fellowship in Surgery at Lahey Clinic; and was first assistant to Dr. Frank Lahey. Dr. Houston arrived at Newport Hospital in 1952, as a general and Thoracic surgeon and practiced for 45 years until his retirement in 1997 at the age of 76years. He was chief of surgery for 13 years, and has his private practice on Bellevue Avenue in the Audrain Building. He was licensed in the States of Pennsylvania, Maine and Rhode Island.Dr. Houston was certified on the American Board of Surgery; a Fellow on the American College of Surgeons and memberships to: American Medical Association, R.I. State Medical Association, Providence Surgical Society, the R.I Chapter of American College of Surgeons. Dr. Houston was honored the Physician of the Year Award by the Newport Hospital powers to be in 1990. He was a member of the Clambake Club of Newport; Ida Lewis Yacht Club; Newport Rifle Club; the Newport Art Museum; the Redwood Library and shareholder; the Norman Bird Sanctuary; the Newport Preservation Society; the Tennis Hall of Fame; and last, a past member of the Dunes Club of Narragansett, RI. He is survived by his wife and children as follows; Jeffrey P Houston, M.D. and wife Karen of Middletown; Robin H. Ostrander and husband, Michael of Westwood, MA; Barbara H. Reed of Middletown; Paul L. Houston of Lynn, MA; Diane M. Houston, M.S.A/ of Newport, RI and daughter Mary Ellen Burns preceded his death. He is also survived by grand and great grand children. He will be missed by his pet Prince William. Burial will be private.
