September 28, 1946 — June 5, 2014

East Providence, RI - Dwight Forest Matthews, 67, of East Providence, died Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the Veterans Hospital in Providence, RI. Born in Newport, RI on September 29, 1946, he was the son of the late Lyle and Hannah (Waldron) Matthews. Dwight attended the Newport public schools, and graduated from Rogers High School, and played football throughout high school and was an avid sports fan. After high school, he went to college. He joined the Army in 1966, and was sent to Germany then Viet Nam in 1967, returning from Viet Nam as a disabled veteran. After leaving the Army, he lived in California for a while, and then returned to RI where he lived in a variety of Assisted Living facilities over the years. Throughout the years, he made many friends, went to art school, becoming an accomplished painter. While living in St. Joseph's Assisted Living, some of his paintings were placed in an art show. He continued to paint and draw while living at Berkshire Place, and donated some of his work to the Veterans Dialysis Ward, where he went three days a week for the last three years. His family would like to thank the staff at the Veterans Hospital, dialysis ward and the Intensive Care staff for the wonderful care they gave Dwight through the years. Dwight always asked about his friends and family, what they were doing, where they were living and how they were. He leaves to mourn him, his brother Thomas Matthews and his wife Donna, of Middletown, and his sister Fern Lima and her husband John of Newport, and his step sister Madelyn Humphries of Newport.
