Dwight S. Smith

Jamestown, RI - Dwight S. Smith, 60, of 87 Intrepid Lane, Jamestown, RI, died at home Friday, November 20, 2009, after a determined and dignified battle with cancer. He was the husband of Judith Hortman Smith.Born in Montclair, NJ on May 30, 1949, Dwight was the son of Audrey Hawthorne Smith of Soamesville, Maine and the late F. Stoddart Smith. In addition to his wife and mother, Dwight leaves his daughters, Jana Magarian, and her husband, Christopher, of Jamestown and Lauren Melucci and her husband David of Warwick, RI. Grandad will be greatly missed by his beloved grandchildren, Callum, Audrey, and Katherine Magarian and Stella and Zoe Melucci. Dwight is survived by his two brothers Phillip Smith and Mark Smith, both of whom reside in Maine, and his father and mother-in-law, William and Barbara Hortman of South Carolina.Dwight was raised in Delaware and received his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Maine, and subsequently his Masters Degree from Rhode Island College.Dwight, an art educator in the Portsmouth School Department for 34 years, dynamically mentored the creative lives of schoolchildren of all ages. Having taught at the Portsmouth Middle School and Portsmouth Elementary Schools, Dwight finished an exemplary teaching career at Portsmouth High School as chairperson of the Fine Arts Department.In his retirement, Dwight continued to have a substantial impact on the art community. He was the cartoonist for the Jamestown Press, an active member of the Conanicut Island Art Association and a frequent exhibitor at galleries and in the area. Most recently, Dwight launched a new career as the lead designer for Hypnartic Artwork, a company that produces kinetic garden sculpture. His commitment to the arts included a long tenure in the Boys and Mens Choir of Emmanuel Church and an ongoing interest in the beauty of his natural surroundings. In addition to an enthusiasm for travel, Dwight was an avid tennis player and golfer. A memorial service to celebrate Dwights life will be held on Wednesday, November 25 in the Memorial Funeral Home at 375 Broadway in Newport, RI. Calling hours will be held in the funeral home from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm.
