Portsmouth, RI - Earl R. Lind, PhD., 86, of Portsmouth, RI, died on Sunday, December 15, 2013. He was the husband of Ellanette (Jurd) Lind for 47 years, who died in October 2013. Earl was born in Duluth, MN on September 3, 1927. Earl graduated from Sault St. Marie High School, Michigan, in 1945. He continued his education at Michigan Technological University and earned his BS and MS degrees in Engineering. Service to his country gave him some new experience for his education, and he served in the US Air Force from 1951-1953. Earl then earned his PhD from University of Wisconsin in Electrical Engineering in 1958. His career brought him to Raytheon where his work earned several patents, including one for sonar technology. His dedication to his profession was evident with his longtime membership to the Research Society of America. He and his wife married in 1966 while living in Sarasota, FL and lived there for many years before moving to Portsmouth. Earl had a sharp sarcastic wit, and was a clever engineer who could figure out how to fix anything. He was also quick to enjoy a cigar. Mr. and Mrs. Lind were very generous people, donating to many organizations, both nationally and in Portsmouth. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was the youngest of four boys. A Memorial service will be held on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 11:00am in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, to recognize the lives of both Earl and his wife Ellanette.
