Portsmouth, RI - Edith Rogers, 88, of 242 Hedly Street, Portsmouth, RI, died Friday, June 12, 2009, in Middletown, RI, at Forest Farm Health Care Center, surrounded by her loving family.She was the wife of the late George Rogers.Born in Portsmouth, RI on February 18, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Mary Carvalho Barboza.Mrs. Rogers worked for 31 years, retiring in 1987, for the State of Rhode Island as a cook for the State School Food Service.She is survived by her sons, retired Portsmouth Police Chief Paul Rogers of Port Orange, FL and retired Iron Worker, Local 7 Boston, William Rogers and his wife, Judith V., of Portsmouth, RI, her brother Jesse Barboza of Portsmouth, RI, her sisters Bella Edwards of Charleston, SC and Ollie Payton of Tallahassee, FL, as well as eight grandchildren, Cheryl Kearns, Kristin Massad, Justin Rogers, Jason Rogers, Debra Tetrault, Leona Squatrito, William Rogers, II, Manuel Rogers, one step granddaughter, Joy Harrington and seventeen great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her brother William Barboza and her sister Beatrice Borden.Her funeral was held on Monday, June 15, 2009, at 9:00 am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.Burial was performed in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.Calling hours were held on Sunday, June 14, 2009, from 4-7pm in the Connors Funeral Home.Memorial donations in her memory can be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
