Edmond J. "Ed" Rego

Edmond J. Ed Rego, 73, of Portsmouth, RI, died peacefully at home on Thursday, August 9, 2012. He was the loving husband of Lisa (Perry) Rego for 17 years. Born in Fall River, MA on December 5, 1938, he was the son of the late Joseph S. Rego, Jr. and Lorraine (LeComte) Rego. In addition to his wife, Ed is survived by his son, Michael Rego and his wife Nancie of Swansea, MA; his grandson Karl DaPonte of Fall River, MA; and his great-granddaughter, Mikayla DaPonte. He also leaves his sister, Phyllis Reis and her husband August of Tiverton, RI; his two nephews, David Reis and his wife Nancy of Westerly, RI, and Steven Reis of Tiverton, RI; and his niece, Kimberly Reis, of Freedom, NH. Ed was a proud member of the US Navy Submarine Force from 1957 to 1959. Ed began his career with Raytheon Company in 1961 (then known as the Submarine Signal Division), and retired in 2000. Over the years he had a number of secondary careers, most notably the auto mechanic work he did with his good friend, the late Vic Testa, and various electrical jobs he worked on with his father, Joe. Ed was most happy when he busy and productive. Ed enjoyed fishing, canoeing, and skiing down the slopes of Sugarbush, VT, but by far, his passion was gardening. He experienced great joy from starting his own seedlings and nurturing them throughout the growing season. Ed loved to share the bounty, and neighbors and friends would always find baskets of fresh produce available for their enjoyment. Always willing to help someone in need, Ed will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, and kindness and generosity towards others. He was a tireless worker, and always a thoughtful and considerate gentleman. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, August 13, 2012 from 4-7 pm with a prayer service at 4 pm in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI,.Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840 or to an animal shelter of your choice.
