Middletown, RI - Edmund J. DeCosta, 88, of Middletown, RI, formerly of 27 Hoppin Road, Newport, died Friday, November 12, 2010 at Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown, RI.He was the husband of Doris Louise Ibscher DeCosta. Born in Newport, RI on August 3, 1922, he was the son of the late Antone and Georgianna Pacheco DeCosta.Mr. DeCosta played on the Rogers High School Basketball team in 1941. He then went on to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. Upon returning home he was a store manager for the former First National Supermarket, retiring in 1983 after 42 years. Mr. DeCosta was a communicant of Jesus Saviour church. He was a member of the Vasco da Gama Society, the Knights of Columbus 4201, a former member of the Green Valley Country Club, a member of the Aquidneck Bowling League, fast pitch softball and the City Basketball League. Mr. DeCosta was an avid fan of the Red Sox and Celtics. He also was an umpire for Little League. Besides his wife of 63 years, he is survived by his children, Robert Belle DeCosta, Donald Monica DeCosta, Thomas Christine DeCosta, Michael DeCosta and Sharon Mello, Edmund DeCosta and Doreen DeCosta Murphy and her husband Stephen, his brother Joseph DeCosta, his sister Gilda DeCosta, his grandchildren, Robin DeCosta, Todd DeCosta, Jeannie Pierce, Lee Kathryn DeCosta, Jeffrey Sroczynski, Scott Sroczyniski, Gregory Thomas DeCosta Jillian Mary DeCosta, Callan DeCosta, Kelly DeCosta, Matthew Connell DeCosta, Kyle Joseph DeCosta, Justin Thomas DeCosta, Tyler Marie Murphy, and Nichole Murphy, and his Great grandchildren, Ryan and AnnaHe was the brother of the late Jessie DeCosta, Mary Dias, Antone DeCosta, Alice Massed and William DeCosta.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, from 4-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at 9:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Jesus Savior Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport.Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
