Middletown, RI - Edward Albert Sherman, Jr., of Middletown, former editor and co-owner of The Newport Daily News, died Saturday, December 16, 2006, at Forest Farm Nursing Home in Middletown. He was the husband of the late Kirtley Maxfield Sherman, who passed away in 1981.Born at Newport Hospital on June 19, 1915, Mr. Sherman was the son of Edward Albert Sherman and Hazel Poole Sherman. Growing up in Newport he attended Cranston-Calvert School, Rogers High School; and graduated from Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass. He attended Nichols Junior College in Franklin, Mass., and Syracuse University.During World War II he served in the Navy on a minesweeper stationed in Key West. Following the war, Mr. Sherman and his brother Albert together took over the helm of the Edward A. Sherman Publishing Company, which was founded by their father. As prescribed by their fathers will, the two brothers became co-publishers of The Newport Daily News in 1948, on Alberts 30th birthday.A devoted husband and father, Mr. Sherman known to all as Ned never remarried. He is survived by his three children, Kirtley S. Mitchell of Newport; Edward Albert Sherman, III, and his wife Mary, of Newport; and Elizabeth S. Walker and her husband James, of Middletown. He leaves five grandchildren: Edward S. Horton of New York City; Kirtley H. Cameron of Bedford, N.Y.; and James, William, and Helena Walker all of Middletown; and a great-granddaughter, Mary Kirtley Cameron.Mr. Sherman loved his native Newport. He was considered by some to be a knowledgeable collector with a keen eye for the work of local artists whose seascapes, landscapes, and painted scenes of Newport life covered the walls of his home. He savored his friendships, and loved nothing more than being in the company of friends. The more gathered together in one room, the better. And if someone had entered the room a stranger, he made it his job to ensure that person would exit a friend.Mr. Sherman was a Mayflower descendant and was a member of the Newport Historical Society, Redwood Library, the Newport Art Museum, the Sons of the Revolution, and the Society of Colonial Wars. Mr. Sherman was a member and served as secretary of the Clambake Club of Newport. He had also been a member of Ida Lewis Yacht Club, the Newport Reading Room, and the Newport Country Club. Prior to World War II, he served a term on the Newport City Council.Calling hours will be from 4-6pm on Tuesday, December 19 at the Hambly Funeral Home, ?Brick House?, 30 Red Cross Avenue.
