Edward E. Johnston

Portsmouth, RI - Lt. Edward E. Johnston, Ret, 88, of Portsmouth, RI, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at home with his family.He was the husband of Janice Louise Clark Johnston. Born in Cincinnati, OH on September 20, 1922, he was the son of the late Edward E. and Florence Henry Johnston.Mr. Johnston served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Newport Police Department for over 30 years, retiring as a Lieutenant in 1981, and retired from the Navy reserves in 1982. Mr. Johnston was a member of the Masons St. Johns Lodge, the Newport Elks Lodge #104, and the VFW. He volunteered at the Department of Forestry in California, the Newport Naval Health Clinic and the Eye Clinic in California. Ed loved to travel, volunteer and enjoyed being around people.Besides his wife of 29 years, he is survived by his children, Robert Beese and his wife Malana of Portsmouth, RI, and Jennifer Allan of Middletown, RI, and his grandchildren, Evan Beese, Andrew Beese, Justin Allan and Jayna Allan. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, from 5-7PM in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. Burial will be private.
